Getting Help From Home

2 Ways In Home Care Can Help With Your Special Needs Child

As a parent of a child with special needs, your life can get tricky, complicated, and hectic. One thing you can do to help make your life easier is to work with a home health care service to get some help that can come to your house and make your life easier. A special needs home care worker can help you out in several ways.

Respite Care

One way that a home care worker can help you out is through respite care. Respite care is when someone else takes care of your child for a specific amount of time, giving you a break. During that break, you can go out and do errands, have some time to yourself, or work around the house. If you have an in-home worker providing respite care, they will come to your house and take care of your child there. How many hours they will be there and how often they come depends on your contract with the home health care service and your insurance company. One nice thing about respite care in your home is that your child will be in a familiar environment. Some children react poorly to changes in routine. If your house is set up with accommodations for your child, being at home can be easier than trying to deal with locations that are accessible.

Wound Care

If your child is in a wheelchair, you may have to deal with pressure ulcers. Even if you and your child are careful to ensure that there are no wrinkles between their skin and the padding and to shift around regularly, pressure ulcers can happen. The way they form is that the bones exert pressure on the tissues underneath, and if there is no weight shift, the continued pressure can open up an ulcer that starts inside and works its way out. The ulcer is bigger nearer the bone than outside, requiring special care. If the wound were to heal from the outside, the topmost part would heal, leaving the ulcer under the skin. Part of getting the wound to heal from the inside out requires special dressings for the wound. For that, medical assistance can be necessary. The home health care service can send a wound care nurse out to change the dressings and ensure the ulcer is healing well.

About Me

Getting Help From Home

After I was diagnosed with a serious medical condition, I didn't know what to do. I was frustrated with the idea that I wouldn't live forever, and I was really concerned about being there for my kids. Fortunately, my doctor recommended a home health care regimen, which would mean doctors and nurses would come to my house. I was worried about what it would be like to work with professionals at home, but I thought it was a great option. The service was spectacular. Seeing doctors at home freed up my time and made me feel a lot more comfortable. This blog is all about how home health care can help you.
